Calne Leisure Centre is a multi-activity leisure centre in Wiltshire. It boasts a swimming pool, squash court, exercise rooms and health suite.
How We Helped
Long opening hours means that Calne Leisure Centre are classed as heavy users of lighting. This has resulted in high energy bills and a significant maintenance commitment.
It was therefore identified that the leisure centre was in urgent need of improved energy efficient lighting. The original installation of fluorescent tubing throughout the facility was in poor condition, affecting not only the look and feel of the centre, but it was also proving to be of a health and safety concern; especially within the swimming pool area.
By selecting energy-efficient LED lighting solutions, SMARTech energy were able to address the centre’s four key areas for improvement:
- Energy costs
LED Lighting Saves upto a 68% in Energy Reduction
Technological advances in LED lighting, together with proven cost and environmental benefits means businesses can save 68% in their annual energy costs.
Benefits of LED lighting include:
- Long Life and High Lumen Maintenance
- Low Maintenance
- Energy, Efficiency and Sustainability
- Vivid Colours without Filters and Colour Change
- Directed Light
- No Mercury & Environmentally friendly
- No Heat or UV in the Light Beam
The site survey and optimised design used XX x XXw in LED fittings. This reduced the overall energy consumption by 68% and has greatly increased the luminance levels from 150 lux to 341 lux.
- High energy consumption
SMARTech energy’s innovative energy monitoring technology helps to track energy wastage and consumption. Using real-time data, SMARTech energy could identify that the centre consumed a total of 105,592kwh per year and were therefore able to make appropriate recommendations to optimise equipment efficiency and achieve energy and cost reductions to 34,113kwh – a saving of 68%.
- Health & safety
Calne Leisure Centre required higher levels of light to see swimmers better and improve the overall look and feel of the swimming area. Areas of most concern included the bottom of the pool which affected the quality and visibility of light for the life guards.

- Legal compliance
SMARTech energy adhere to the recommendations of Sport England and The Chartered Institute of Building Service Engineers (CIBSE) good practice guide; which encourages sporting centres to consider current codes on lighting levels.
Working with the leisure centre’s management team, SMARTech energy were able to design a lighting solution which ensured that the correct lighting output was met whilst using the most efficient luminaires possible to reduce energy consumption.
