The Client

Summit Chairs are an independent design and manufacture business, working out of their factory headquarters on the White Horse Business Park, Trowbridge, Wiltshire.  They have been making furniture for 40 years and are proud of the passion and enthusiasm that still goes into each piece.

This case study is a superb example of how the results from SMARTech energy’s Energy Management Survey (EMS) has helped to not only improve the working environment, but to save costs from a company’s bottom line.

How We Helped

Ventilation and lighting play a crucial role in the working environment for most buildings and especially, within a manufacturing facility.  Corsham-based energy reduction specialist, SMARTech energy, were brought on board to identify and highlight opportunities for improvement.

Summit Chairs engaged with SMARTech energy on an Energy Management Survey (EMS); which means our team of energy consultants work closely with the facility to help them understand where and when their energy is being consumed.

With the use of data analytics, recommendations were made to help identify adjustments needed to optimise cost and energy efficiency throughout the factory.  From this, it was quickly understood that the reconfiguration of the existing extraction system, together with a comprehensive LED lighting upgrade would improve the air quality and illumination within the warehouse and offices; enabling substantial energy savings that would also improve the quality of the working environment.

3D Lighting Simulation

Using 3D lighting software and our design expertise, SMARTech energy were able to identify how best to maximise lighting in dark areas and optimise energy efficiencies through Summit Chair’s manufacturing site.

Funding

As an Accredited Supplier of the Carbon Trust, projects delivered by SMARTech energy are eligible for a capital contribution of up to 15% of the project cost, up to a maximum of £5,000 from the Carbon Trust’s Green Business Fund.

SMARTech energy worked with Summit Chairs to identify finance solutions to help with the funding of the project and it was successfully part-funded by this initiative.

64% Energy Reduction

Working together, SMARTech energy and Summit Chairs developed a plan to reduce yearly energy consumption by 64%.

The project was completed with minimum disruption to the operational practices of the business and with the quality of the lighting immediately apparent, SMARTech energy predict a reduction in CO2 emissions of 20 tonnes per year and a return on investment within 5 years.
