Why monitoring is the first step towards Net Zero

When it comes to energy efficiency and sustainability, you can’t manage what you don’t measure. For many organisations, the first step on the journey to Net Zero is gaining real-time visibility of how and where energy is being used.
At SMARTech energy, we install high-resolution monitoring systems that give a live, detailed view of site energy use. This insight supports compliance, carbon reporting, and verified savings.

Case Study 1: Monitoring to strengthen GHG reporting

SMARTech recently partnered with JDM Food Group to install a comprehensive energy monitoring system across their operations.
  • Energy monitoring installed
  • Live visibility of consumption across site
  • Data available to support energy efficiency projects and compliance reporting
For GHG reporting, organisations must gather a wide range of information. This includes energy and fuel use, refrigerants, waste, purchased goods, and more. Monitoring does not replace this data. However, it adds real-time insight that helps JDM Food Group better understand their energy profile.
The system now shows JDM Food Group where energy is consumed, wasted, and how usage changes across shifts. With accurate data in place, they are preparing their first GHG emissions report with SMARTech’s support. This report marks a key step in measuring their carbon footprint and planning a Net Zero strategy.

Case Study 2: From monitoring to full compliance

Stonegate Farmers Ltd has already progressed further along the journey with SMARTech’s support. Together, we have:

  • Installed monitoring across their site for live energy data
  • Completed ESOS Phase 3 with SMARTech as their accredited ESOS Lead Assessor
  • Delivered a GHG emissions report for transparent, auditable carbon disclosure
  • Held workshops with their teams, identifying 37 opportunities to reduce carbon
  • Begun work on quantifying the savings and refining their carbon intensity metrics

The next step for Stonegate Farmers is alignment with the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). This will ensure their reduction targets are validated against global climate science.

By combining monitoring, compliance, and strategy, Stonegate Farmers Ltd are well positioned to reduce emissions, strengthen resilience, and show leadership in sustainability.

Compliance as an opportunity, not a tick-box

Many organisations view compliance with schemes like ESOS and SECR as an obligation. In reality, it can be much more. With the right data and strategy, compliance becomes an opportunity to cut costs, reduce risk, and future-proof operations.
By starting with monitoring, organisations can move seamlessly through compliance requirements and towards long-term Net Zero goals, with every step measured, verified, and backed by trusted expertise.
