Reducing energy consumption in the print industry

With an annual turnover of £14.1 billion, the UK is the fifth largest producer of printed products in the world.

As an industry renowned for its robust and innovative approach to environmental management, evident in the high level of engagement with the ISO 14001 environmental management standard, it is vital that its carbon footprint is continually re-evaluated and challenged and energy saving in the Printing Industry is a key area.

One area in which energy reduction can still be achieved is the management of energy usage. Through the implementation of some very simple but effective solutions for energy saving in the Printing Industry, substantial savings can made.

  1. Overall Base Load – experience has shown us that on average, whilst factories should be operating at a base load of 1-3% of their yearly running costs at night time, in reality this figure is closer to 14%. Smart energy management has been proven to provide substantial reductions in this figure.
  1. LED Lighting – by simply upgrading to a good quality LED lighting   system, improved power quality and reduced ampage can be achieved across a site bringing with it savings of up to 90%.
  1. Voltage Optimisation – this solution easily achieves significant energy savings on the applicable sites, whilst also increasing the longevity of electrical equipment through a reduction in heat and vibration caused by higher voltages.
  1. Motor Optimisation – savings of up to 60% can be made by ensuring that all electric motors are optimised through adding intelligence. Coupled with this are the reduced maintenance and repair costs, a decrease in downtime of the equipment and ultimately an increased lifespan.
  1. EcoCooing – using the latest energy efficient technologies, these ventilation and cooling systems provide an innovative alternative to air-conditioning. They use around only 3% of the energy of their air-conditioning counterparts. This combined with their low running and maintenance costs can provide huge efficiencies and cost savings.

Ultimately there are numerous ways in which you can manage your energy consumption, reduce costs and increase profits. All of these can be easily achieved through a well-planned energy management programme and an effective project manager to steer the process. Alongside this are the excellent project financing options available through carbon trust finance.
