SMARTech energy pledge support of Wiltshire Council’s Be Involved Initiative to increase access to jobs, including apprenticeships and internships among youth.

Corsham-based SMARTech energy is an outstanding success story for the town and has had another incredible year, continually increasing its customer base and recruiting more staff.  Signing up to Wiltshire Council’s ‘Be Involved’ initiative is the company’s latest commitment in the support of young people in the workforce.

Catherine Brooks, Employment Liaison Assistant at Wiltshire Council said “Access to apprenticeships and internships is essential for preparing those starting out in the workplace to compete in today’s workforce and we are delighted to have SMARTech energy on board”.

The Be Involved campaign supports youngsters in the workplace

The ‘Be Involved’ campaign is a Swindon and Wiltshire initiative in which local organisations pledge to work together to support youngsters into the workplace.

Catherine continues “We know that for many starting out in the workforce, there isn’t a direct line to success and that the more opportunities young people have to gain work experience, the better chance they have for future career success.  It’s hoped that the initiatives supported by the Be Involved campaign will reflect the different pathways that are essential for helping more young people into the workforce”.

Apprentices play an important role at SMARTech energy

Apprentices already play an important role in SMARTech energy’s success as it grows. At 23, office administrator, Adam Valovec has recently completed his Level 3 Apprenticeship in Business Administration.  Now, with the company dedicated to ensuring that regular business requirements, versus skills matching reviews are regularly undertaken, an opportunity arose for Adam to enrol on the Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT) Level 2 course; further enhancing the support element of his role to the benefit of the company as a whole.

The award-winning energy management and reduction specialist recognises that a key area of running your own business is to acknowledge its strengths and weaknesses and to identify where the business lacks skills. Retention of staff can be costly and therefore, MD of SMARTech energy, Stuart Pearce invests heavily in training and development of his staff; getting the right team in the right roles is essential to maintaining business growth.

On the job mentoring and guidance

Stuart Says “SMARTech energy insists on quality and excellence from staff at every level of the customer process and there is a great deal of individual attention given to developing members of staff and when skills gaps or development opportunities arise, these are quickly identified and progressed”.

Stuart adds “Training and development raises knowledge levels to confidently make the right decisions for the benefit of not only the company, but the customer”.

The company’s specialist SMARTech electrical services team has two Apprentice Electricians in their third year of training from Wiltshire College.  23-year-old Sam Walker and 18-year-old Jordan Chidlow – who successfully secured his apprenticeship with SMARTech energy following the collapse of his previous firm.

With on-the-job mentoring and guidance from SMARTech energy’s electrical team leaders, both apprentice electricians are now set to gain vital experience and technical knowledge of the energy saving and environmental benefits of energy-saving technologies.

Learning vital skills while earning money

Stuart says “Apprenticeships are becoming more popular with school leavers looking to build a successful career and to earn a salary at the same time. For a Small to Medium Enterprise (SME) like SMARTech energy, the apprenticeship scheme enables us to shape the training with the specialist technical skills we need to maintain business growth”.

“I would urge any business yet to take on an apprentice to do so. Apprenticeships, traineeships and internships are a great way to learn vital skills while earning money and our pledge to the Be Involved campaign further validates our commitment to our staff, customers and our future business growth”.
