Swindon-based construction firm Beard, have contracted energy management specialist SMARTech energy, to help implement the government’s mandatory Streamlined Energy and Carbon Reporting (SECR) policy.

Streamlined Energy & Carbon Reporting Framework for UK Business

SECR legislation, which came into force on 1st April 2019, requires all large UK companies and large LLPs, as well as all quoted companies, to disclose their energy and carbon emission usage, greenhouse gas emissions and energy efficiency actions.

SECR Criteria

The SECR framework applies to those companies who have either more than 250 employees and /or have £36m or more turnover and /or balance sheet total of more than £18m.  The report must be included in a company’s Directors’ Report (or a new Energy and Carbon Report for large LLPs) and filed with Companies House.

Fines for Failing to Comply

Companies who fail to comply with the new SECR requirements may have to resubmit their annual company accounts to Companies House or pay fines if missing filing deadlines.

Helping organisations achieve SECR compliance

As leaders in energy management and reduction solutions, SMARTech energy have the technical know-how and experience to help organisations achieve SECR compliance; offering site surveys, energy audit reports and monitoring to identify energy consumption and cost saving opportunities.

MD of SMARTech energy Stuart Pearce says “One of the major barriers to an organisation reducing their energy consumption is the lack of knowledge and information.  Businesses across all sectors are initially concerned about the anticipated costs to implement energy saving, but it’s technologies such as the Eniscope real time energy monitoring system which tracks energy usage, that gives credible information on energy wastage and consumption – and it’s this data which helps key decision makers to make change for the long term and generate an immediate financial return”.

Stuart continues “We look forward to helping the Beard Construction Group to achieve SECR compliance and to supporting their commitment in sustainable energy management”.

Mike Hedges, Director at Beard Construction

Beard’s Bristol director Mike Hedges, said: “Beard are passionate about driving long term improvement and reducing any environmental impact of our operations. We worked with SMARTech previously for our Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme (ESOS) report, so we knew what we could achieve in terms of compliance with their support. After ESOS was complete we turned our attention to the SECR policy, and we’re pleased to be working with SMARTech again on this.

“As part of the SECR compliance, we will report on the carbon and energy outputs across all our sites, which includes diesel usage in all our vehicles, as well as electrical and gas usage for the offices, and even fuel for company cars.

“It’s really important to us as a construction firm to be equipped with all of the information needed  to help reduce the environmental impact of what we do”.
