Pym & Wildsmith (Metal Finishers) Ltd. is a specialist metal finishing manufacturer based in Staffordshire. Operating across several industrial units with multiple production departments running concurrently, their processes rely heavily on both electricity and gas.

Through SMARTech energy’s EEaaS programme, Pym & Wildsmith set out to reduce energy use and carbon emissions, without upfront capital investment.

The challenge

SMARTech energy implemented a tailored EEaaS programme across the site, supported by advanced Measurement and Verification (M&V) in line with IPMVP Option C.

Following installation, SMARTech carried out the first reconciliation review to confirm verified savings, strengthen model precision, and ensure statistical robustness.

The work behind the results

To achieve the verified reductions, SMARTech energy implemented a combination of technology upgrades and control strategies under its Energy Efficiency as a Service (EEaaS) programme. These measures were designed to optimise energy use across the site while maintaining operational performance and comfort.

Lighting upgrade (LED)

The site’s existing magnetic ballast-based fluorescent lighting was replaced with high-efficiency LED fixtures.

This upgrade involved:

  • Removing and responsibly disposing of old fluorescent fittings in line with environmental regulations.
  • Installing modern LED luminaires that deliver improved illumination quality and visual comfort.
  • Deploying occupancy sensors and control systems to ensure lighting operates only when required.

These changes significantly reduced energy use and maintenance costs while extending fixture lifespan. The integrated control strategy further minimises unnecessary operation and ensures lighting aligns with actual site activity.

SMART Factory initiative

Prior to the project, the site’s production systems operated with limited automation, leading to unnecessary energy use and additional equipment wear.

Under SMARTech’s SMART Factory initiative, advanced sensors, control systems, and automation technologies were integrated into existing processes to synchronise and optimise machinery operation.

Key benefits include:

  • Dynamic control of energy use based on real-time production requirements.
  • Automated on/off cycles and synchronised process control.
  • Enhanced equipment performance and extended asset lifespan.

These technologies enable the site to adapt energy use to actual operational demand, improving efficiency and maintaining production quality without removing or replacing existing equipment.

The results

The analysis confirmed a 23.8% verified reduction in electricity use, achieved through a refined and statistically robust M&V model (R² = 0.93, CV(RMSE) = 13.8%).

This represents a measurable and ongoing reduction in both carbon emissions and energy intensity across the site.

This reconciliation highlights the strength of SMARTech’s EEaaS programme, combining technology, analytics, and transparent M&V practices to deliver measurable and sustainable results.
